Why Am I So Sore After My Massage?!

You booked your massage with your favorite massage therapist and all goes well, as expected ... you leave feeling wonderful and often, like a whole new person! Until the next morning, that is, when roll out of bed and realize that your muscles are so sore, you MUST have worked out hard yesterday!

What you are feeling is perfectly normal. This 'post-massage soreness' is quite common if you receive Therapeutic Bodywork, more commonly referred to as a Deep Tissue Massage.

Most people wish their massage to provide relief with releasing specific tight spots (knots/adhesions) they have, many of which are chronic issues for them.  A Deep Tissue massage focuses on these tight spots (that are in the deeper layers of the muscle tissues and fascia) because your therapist will work slowly with firm pressure using his or her knuckles, forearms or elbows.

Receiving a Deep Tissue Massage IS similar to experiencing a tough workout. These muscles are being lengthened, stretched and kneaded to increase circulation to these trouble spots. During this time we are breaking up the knots/dhesions in the muscle and that is what causes some next day post massage soreness. At my Boulder City studio, I customize your massage tailored to what you and your body needs at the time of your treatment. In addition, I use doTERRA's™ Deep Blue cream on the problem area because it provides a comforting sensation of cooling and warmth for the ultimate therapeutic experience.  And of course, this or any other doTERRA™ Aromatherapy is included in every massage at no additional cost!

At Massage by Shawna, my goal is to provide you with an enjoyable massage experience. If at any time the pressure is too much please let me know so I can adjust my pressure to a comfortable level. The post massage soreness usually lasts 24-48 hours. Any longer than that please let me know prior to your next appointment and we can adjust the amount of pressure, of course.

A few things that I suggest to my clients after receiving a Deep Tissue massage:

1. Be sure to drink plenty of water BEFORE and AFTER your massage.  If your muscles are hydrated this may help with the post massage soreness.

2. Take it easy for the rest of the day after your massage. You will feel lighter, more relaxed and a bit out of it for a few hours after your massage. It's always good to go home and relax and not go run a marathon!

3. Take a warm Epsom salt bath for about 20-40 minutes. Epsom salts help flush your body of toxins and reduce inflammation. Add a few drops of DoTerra's lavender essential oil to the bath for a calming/relaxing effect.

We know that regular massage boosts your mood, relaxes your muscles and reduces stress! After receiving bodywork on a regular basis your body will become more accustomed to it therefore the post massage soreness will be less! Book now for your regular weekly, biweekly, or monthly massages!
